About the Raqs Sharqi Society The Society was founded in 1997 as a non-profit association in order to develop the work of its predecessor the Hilal School of Raqs Sharqi (established in the mid-1980s).
The Society is an international network of trained teachers, performers and associates who are committed to this distinctive form of Egyptian dance. We seek to promote understanding, appreciation and recognition of the dance and its rich musical and cultural traditions. Providing information, resources, support and continuing opportunities for teachers, performers and students is a key aspect of our work.
